Lt D Walmsley at the 50th Celebrations, Park Avenue.

"Park Avenue (PA) Methodist Church, Northampton, was built in 1925 and originally supported Scouts and Cubs as the "Uniformed organisations" for boy's of the local area. These were discontinued during WWII. After the war, during the ministry of the Revd. Norman Povey, the leaders of the church authorised a remarkable charismatic Master Carpenter, Bill Richardson to start a B.B. company which met for the first time on 26th October, 1945. Mr B Richardson was Captain, he had Walter Underwood and myself as Lieutenants together with eight boys; Eric Bullock, John Care, John Dickens, Trevor Dickens, David Hardwick, Jack Richardson, David Risdale And Francis (Frank) Mortimer (a future Captain). The following week an ex-RAF sergeant gym instructor Ted Lester joined as a Lieutenant (and 2nd in command) together with 4 more boy's including Ronald Wood (elder brother of Trevor, our present Captain), and Brian Wright who won distinction as a young local footballer.

In the early days, to get started, the company was helped by Lt Maycock of the 22nd, (Towcester Road) and by officers from the 6th (Kingsley Park) and 24th (Broadmead Avenue) Companies. From the first the fact that numerically the 30th was a very small company meant that a strong "family" tradition was established. Everyone had to take part in every activity and soon the Northampton Battalion became aware of the strength of character of the boys in the 30th, especially in Company drill and in the Battalion Football League. On one famous occasion the local newspaper (the "Chronicle & Echo") published a cartoon noting that the 30th had defeated another B.B. Company in a football match by 55 to 0 - but then the 30th did have Brian Wright playing for them.

The first two camps were with the battalion - Old Hunstanton (1946) and Abergele (1947). After these the company was able to support a camp of it's own and aquired an old Army vehicle to transport the equipment. First Aid , Fire Service, Survival Courses, Orienteering and many other activities were established.

Looking back, some 450 boys have passed through the various sections of Park Avenue's 30th Boys' Brigade and have been influenced by the aims of that organisation. Many have taken up roles all over the country in youth and church work whilst others have been and are involved in local community activities. Two members of the Company have served as Mayors of Northampton."

Footnote;
Many, many thanks to Mr David Walmsley for the foreword to this part of the site. He sent me so much information you will find quotes all over the site from his letter and another foreword on the 50th Anniversary page. Lt Walmsley fails to tell you he was one of the past members to become Mayor of Northampton, the other being Mr Roger Winter. His Mayoral project for his year of office was to raise money and install a "Garden for the Blind" in the Town's main Abington Park. Lt Walmsley has been a great supporter of the Boys' Brigade and indeed the 30th. On retiring as an officer for us he became Vice-President of the Battalion. As one of our founding officers we will forever be in his (and his fellow officers) debt.
